Tapioca Pearls, about the size of pearls or small marbles, with a consistency somewhat like gummy candy, are used to make Bubble Tea drinks. Bubble Tea (or Boba Tea) is an Asian sweet iced tea in which the tapioca pearls sit at the bottom of a clear plastic cup with a fat serving straw.

Fresh fruits, milk and or flavored syrups are usually added to create a vast array of flavors. Either black or green tea can be used and popular flavors include milk tea, almond milk tea, taro and coconut. Bubble Tea Fruit Iced Tea flavors include kumquat, passion fruit, apple, orange, star fruit, strawberry, lychee, mango, peppermint, lemon and kiwi.

To cook Tapioca Pearl: Bring 10 cups of water for each 1 cup of tapioca pearl in a large pot to a boil. Pour tapioca pearl into the water slowly, stir gently. After tapioca pearl becomes plump, turn to medium heat and cover the pot for 5 minutes. Scoop the tapioca pearl out and it is ready to serve with Boba Tea drink or mix with honey or syrup. 

What is Boba? Boba Tea, also known as Boba or Bubble Tea is a Taiwanese, tea based drink which often contains tapioca, known as Boba, or Tapioca Pearls at the bottom of the cup. These Boba are sucked up through an extra-large straw and are chewy, kind of like a gummy bear. It is unclear exactly when or who invented Boba, but we do know where, Taichung Taiwan sometime in the 1980's. Most Boba / Bubble tea recipes contain a tea base mixed with fruit or milk.
